posed to another common test method, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which identifies chemical com- ponents.
Of the five products, one was la- belled as artificial and four claimed the oil was naturally sourced. The table below reveals the results of Carbon-14 testing (Biobased%) and the GC-MS testing. GC-MS testing showed all five samples as being chemically identical to natural garlic oil. Carbon-14 testing, however, highlighted ingredient adul- teration since only one of the samples was found to be 100% biobased, or naturally sourced garlic oil. These re- sults are an example of how easy it is
for petrochemical-derived adulterants to go undetected.
CONCLUSION
Carbon-14 analysis determines the biobased content of food ingredients. Testing accurately identifies the per- centage of a material that is natural as opposed to synthetic. This evidence gives suppliers and distributors au- thentication of ingredient naturality to support label claims, garner customer satisfaction, and verifies their products are natural.
