Hygienic Study Award 2021
Recognising young researchers for their outstanding, innovative work in the relevant scientific fields, the Hygienic Study Award offersa platform for young scientists to gain greater insight into the practical relevance of their research work, potential applications, and the needs of in- dustry.
The Hygienic Study Award are sponsored by Fraunhofer IVV Dresden, VDMA Food Processing and Packaging Ma- chinery, and EHEDG. An international jury, consisting of representatives from various universities and research in- stitutions as well as leading industrial companies, evaluate the applications. The winners of the Hygienic Study Award 2021 were honored during the EHEDG Online Congress 2021.
The winners: The VDMA represents more than 3,400 German and European companies of the mechanical engineering industry. The industry stands for innovation, export orientation and medium-sized businesses. The companies employ around four million people in Europe, more than one million of them in Germany. Mechanical and plant engineering represents a European turnover volume of around 800 billion euros. With a net value added of around 270 billion euros, it contributes the highest share of the entire manufacturing sector to the European gross domestic product.
1st prize: Dr Hannes Köhler, TU Dresden, for his dissertation on “Method for the analysis, modelling and optimization of cleaning processes with an impinging coherent liquid jet”.
2nd prize: Georgina Cuckston, University of Cambridge, for her dissertation on “Meth- ods for detailed study of detergent action in cleaning food soils”.
3rd prize: Felix Schottroff, University of Vienna (BOKU) for his dissertation on “Processes employ- ing a direct application of electric fields (so-called electro-technologies), such as pulsed electric fields (PEF) or ohmic heating, are used in food and bioprocessing for the inactivation of micro- organisms”.

UAE’s new law to enhance investor confidence
The United Arab Emirate’s Ministry of Economy (MoE) organized a media briefing on Federal Law No. 11 of 2021 on Industrial Property and Patents, which forms part of the largest legislative amendments in the UAE’s history that encompasses 50 federal laws, including the drafting of new legislation and amendments to the exist- ing ones. H.E. Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and SMEs, noted that the UAE was ranked first in the Arab world for the sixth consecu- tive year by the Global Innovation Index 2021 owing to its success in developing an integrated system for intel- lectual property applications and services. “The new in- dustrial property law is one of the most important initia- tives that the Ministry of Economy and its partners have developed in order to drive growth based on knowledge and innovation and support entrepreneurship. These ef- forts fall in line with the vision, principles and projects launched by the UAE government to establish a new phase of growth, both domestically and globally. This objective will be achieved by accelerating the transfor- mation towards a new, more flexible and sustainable knowledge-based economic model that keeps pace with the latest economic trends in which innovation, technol- ogy, research and development, national competencies, inventors, talents and entrepreneurs are the key drivers of progress”, said the minister.
Furthermore, H.E. underlined that the law supports the country’s strategic direction by developing systems and procedures to ensure legal protection of inventions in a way that encourages the creation of new ideas, in- novations and inventions from individuals and compa- nies in various sectors. This is particularly relevant for the seven priority sectors identified by the National Innovation Strategy, which are education, health care, technology, and transportation, renewable energy, space and water.
