More sustainability in the dairy industry
With a few thousand young peo- ple starting their apprentice- ship in agriculture every year in Ger- many, less than 300 opt for the milk technologist apprenticeship, thus making it one of the “small profes- sions”. Here is where German based dairy education center of the agri- cultural investigation and research institute LUFA in Oldenburg, the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT, Ober- hausen and the department of voca- tional and economic education at the University of Osnabrück got involved in the NaMiTec pilot project which- deals with the Sustainable Develop- ment in Milk Technology.
Special focus on food industry
The NaMiTec pilot project in the funding priority “Vocational Training for Sustainable Development 2015- 2019” (BBNE) is one of 18 pilot proj- ects for Vocational Training for Sus- tainable Development (BBNE) that were funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB). The aim of the pilot project is to create more awareness of the topic of sustainability and more knowledge for trainers about how sustainability can be implemented in companies.

lenges for the responsible companies are correspondingly great. How can the challenges be overcome through sustainable processes, sustainable action concepts and optimized con- trol in production as well as the as- sociated production conditions? In order to strengthen the know-how in dairy technology, UMSICHT research- ers, among others, are working on a new education and training concept for sustainable development in the dairy industry in the NaMiTec proj- ect. This is done in close cooperation with practice partners from the milk processing industry.
A concept for trainers and trainees
Strengthening the sustainability awareness of trainers and trainees - that is the overarching goal of NaMiTec. “With our modular booklets, we impart the knowledge they need to know how sustainability can be implemented in the milk processing industry,” explains Dr. Daniel Maga, Group Leader for Sustainability Assessment at Fraunhofer UMSCHT. “You then pass this knowledge on to the trainees”, said Dr. Maga. Together, both sides acquire basic knowledge about promoting sustainability in dairies and other sustainability-oriented skills.
Dr. Daniel Maga and Anja Ger- stenmeier from Fraunhofer UMSI- CHT participated as co-authors in the NaMiTec model test (short for “Sustainable Development in Milk Technology”) on teaching and learn- ing materials. The modules are now available for download from the Dairy Education Center and the BIBB website. They are offered as “Open Educational Resource” (OER) mate- rial and are therefore freely available.
As the world population grows, so does the need for high quality food. The focus is therefore on questions of health, the origin of the raw materials and production conditions. The chal-
